Meta Business Agent or a custom assistant: when Meta's is enough
Meta now offers its own AI agent for WhatsApp Business. For many businesses it is the right answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a build. Here is how to tell whether it is enough for you, and when a custom assistant earns its cost.
The short answer
Meta's agent is a good default when:
- the questions are general: opening hours, prices, availability, how to book;
- the information it needs is already public: your catalogue, prices and hours;
- when a question gets hard, handing the chat to a person is enough.
A custom assistant earns its cost when:
- the right answer depends on your own rules and their exceptions, not on public information;
- it has to read or write in your own system: open a file, check a status, quote from your tariffs;
- customers send photos or documents that have to be checked against a checklist;
- you need to prove where the data goes, to a client, an auditor or yourself.
If none of the second list applies to you, start with Meta's agent. It is quicker, cheaper, and you will learn what your customers actually ask.
What Meta Business Agent is
On 3 June 2026 Meta announced it was opening Meta Business Agent to businesses of all sizes globally, adding Instagram to WhatsApp and Messenger, where Meta says more than a million businesses already used it. TechCrunch reported the global launch on WhatsApp Business and Instagram after nearly two years of tests in countries such as India and Mexico.
According to Meta, the agent answers questions specific to your business, recommends products from your catalogue, books appointments, qualifies incoming leads and replies in your customers' language using your tone. You decide when a team member steps in. For larger businesses, Meta describes a platform with controls and guardrails that connects to hundreds of systems such as Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee, so the agent can take action on the business's behalf.
On price: Meta says getting started is free, and that access will come through paid subscriptions. TechCrunch reported it would be included in some tiers of the WhatsApp Business Premium subscription. For businesses using it through the API, directly or through a provider, Meta's developer documentation sets a rate of 2 US dollars per million tokens from 1 August 2026, and estimates a typical message at 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, about 4 to 5 US cents.
What Meta's launch materials do not spell out: which sources the agent reads beyond your catalogue and business information, how it handles photos or documents customers send, whether it can work with in-house software that is not on its list of connected systems, and where agent data is stored. If any of those matter to you, ask before you decide. We have left them blank below rather than guess.
Side by side
| Meta Business Agent | Custom assistant | |
|---|---|---|
| Who configures it | You, in Meta's tools. Meta says it can be running in minutes. | A studio or your own team, around your process. Weeks, not minutes. |
| What it answers from | Your business information and your product catalogue. | Your own rules, criteria, tariffs and exceptions, written down and reviewed with you. |
| Integration with your systems | For larger businesses, hundreds of connected systems such as Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee. | Built against your own system, in-house software included: open a file, check a status, create a request. |
| Handover to a person | You decide when a team member steps in. | Rules you define, into the tools your team already uses, with the full conversation attached. |
| Documents and photos | Not described in Meta's launch materials. | Reads photos, documents and voice notes and checks them against your checklist. |
| Data location and evidence | Runs inside Meta's products. Launch materials do not say where agent data is stored. | Messages still travel through WhatsApp, but the knowledge base, logs and files sit where you choose, and you can document it. |
| Cost model | Free to start, then subscription tiers. Through the API, 2 US dollars per million tokens since 1 August 2026, about 4 to 5 US cents a message. | Build and upkeep, AI model usage, and Meta's per-message fee for service messages from 1 October 2026. |
| Who owns the rules | You set them, within what Meta's product offers. Meta decides how the product changes. | You own the rules and the logic, and change them when your process changes. |

Three businesses, three answers
A small shop
Customers ask about stock, sizes, prices and opening hours. Everything is in the catalogue, and anything odd can wait for a person. Meta's agent covers this well, at a fraction of the cost of a build.
An administrative agency answering procedure questions
If the questions are about general procedures and volume is modest, Meta's agent plus a clean handover is enough. If clients ask how their own file is going, and the answer lives in your case system, a custom assistant pays off as volume grows.
A homologation lab quoting and checking documents
What each job needs depends on the vehicle and the modification, customers send photos and certificates, and the request has to be opened in the lab's own platform. This is the pattern we built for Fixlab.
